First, an introduction. My name is Alexander Patton, I am 26 years old and I live in Edmonton, Alberta. I have been working with kids since I graduated high school and in particular, children with special needs. It was really when I worked in the group home system that I knew I wanted to adopt. I have been looking into it since I was 20.
I am not your conventional adopter. I am a single male. Why do I want to adopt at this time of my life when I am young and unmarried? Well, I believe I have a lot to offer and I want to give a child a full life. On top of that, I have always been excited to one day be a father and I have always wanted a son.
When I worked in the group homes, I saw first hand what these kids deal with and promised myself that one day I would adopt a child. I decided that I wanted to adopt an older child between 4 and 10 years old and I am open to children with disabilities.
TODAY the call was made. I am attending the orientation/information session required to start the process next Wednesday where I find out more, ask questions, and then hand in my application to adopt.
Today I also finally told everyone and fortunately, the overall reception is positive. I am glad I have so many friends and family that support me.
This is also the beginning of my blog. The purpose of the blog is for me to go through my feelings during the process, keep a journal on what the process is like, and to hopefully help others who might be going through the same thing.
So, here is to the start!
